The Janata Dal (United) has taken a significant step by expelling its member Anant Singh, along with his wife Neelam Devi, for a period of six years. This decision, announced on Saturday, comes in response to Singh’s alleged involvement in activities deemed detrimental to the party, including his support for a candidate from an opposition group during the recent Legislative Council elections.
According to the official statement released by the party, the Mokama MLA faced expulsion due to his repeated defiance of party orders and for using derogatory remarks aimed at the party’s leadership. Singh’s termination of primary membership was effective immediately, marking a tense moment for the JD(U) as it grapples with internal dissent.
Neelam Devi, who previously held the position of MLA in Mokama, was also affected by the party’s decision. The JD(U) has urged the Speaker of the Bihar Legislative Assembly to kickstart the process for Anant Singh’s disqualification from the assembly, indicating that this saga might not end with the expulsion alone.
In a response to his expulsion, Anant Singh expressed no remorse, confidently asserting that the JD(U) would struggle to secure even ten seats in forthcoming elections. He further declared his intention not to align with any other political entity but rather to establish his own party. Singh’s rebellious stance signals a potential rift within the JD(U) that could have repercussions in future electoral contests.
The backdrop to this controversy includes the elections held for eight seats in the Legislative Council, specifically representing teachers’ and graduates’ constituencies, on Friday. Anant Singh had previously accused Neeraj Kumar, the JD(U)’s current MLC from Patna, of orchestrating a campaign against him, which added to the tensions within the party. Singh had publicly vowed to work against Kumar’s election and had shown support for the Jan Suraaj Party candidate, Anuj Singh, participating actively in his nomination roadshow.
This development highlights the ongoing challenges faced by regional parties in Bihar as they navigate internal conflicts while attempting to maintain unity against an opposition that is increasingly gaining ground. The fallout from this incident might not only affect the future of the individuals involved but could also influence the broader political landscape in Bihar.
