Every year, as summer reaches its peak, millions of eyes turn towards the sky waiting for the first drops of rain. The arrival of the monsoon is not just a change in weather—it is a sign of relief, a hope that taps will continue to flow and our reservoirs will breathe again.
But a worrying question remains: Are we waiting for rain, or are we waiting for a warning that we have ignored for too long?
Today, water shortages are already becoming a reality in parts of Mumbai and many other cities. Tankers have become a daily necessity for thousands of families. Groundwater levels are falling, lakes are shrinking, and the demand for water continues to rise with rapid urban growth.
Imagine a day when water becomes as commercial as fuel. A day when families drive to a “water pump,” wait in long queues, and pay for every litre they carry home—just like we visit petrol pumps to fill our vehicles.
It may sound like a frightening prediction, but if we continue wasting water, that future may not be very far away.
The tragedy is that the solution begins with simple changes. A leaking tap repaired today can save thousands of litres in a year. A bucket instead of an overflowing hose, rainwater harvesting, and mindful daily consumption can collectively protect the resource that keeps every living being alive.
The generation before us valued every drop because they understood its importance. We have the advantage of technology and knowledge, but without responsibility, these advantages mean little.
Nature has always provided us with water freely. The question is whether our actions will force future generations to purchase the very gift that once flowed from rivers, lakes, and the rain.
The next time clouds gather and the first raindrops touch the earth, let us celebrate not just the arrival of rain, but our commitment to protect every drop it brings.
Save water today, because the day we buy water like petrol is not a distant dream—it is a possibility we are creating ourselves.
