Hockey India President Questions Jersey Change to Saffron Ahead of World Cup

The president of Hockey India, Dilip Tirkey, has formally requested clarification from the national governing body regarding the recent decision to switch the team jersey color from blue to saffron, just prior to the World Cup. This unexpected change has sparked controversy, particularly as Tirkey noted that the Hockey India Executive Board was not consulted in the process.

According to reports from The Indian Express, Tirkey expressed his concerns in emails sent to Executive Board members and Hockey India’s executive director, RK Srivastava. He emphasized that the decision appeared to have been made without prior discussion or his knowledge, raising questions about the decision-making transparency within the organization.

In response to the widespread backlash on social media over the jersey change, Hockey India clarified that the shift to saffron was made following discussions with players and coaching staff. They cited technical reasons for this alteration, explaining that the original blue jersey created visibility issues against the blue synthetic surface used in international hockey competitions. Players and coaches had reportedly suggested alternative colors, leading to the adoption of saffron and yellow.

The federation also highlighted that the new design incorporates darker patterns to celebrate India’s rich cultural heritage. They described the change as a representation of the ethos of ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat’—a slogan promoting unity and pride within the nation. The new jerseys are set to debut at the upcoming men’s and women’s World Cup events to be held in Belgium and the Netherlands later this year.
