FIRs Filed Against Meta India Head Amid Youth Protests Over Alleged Defamatory Content About PM Modi

The Hyderabad Police have taken significant legal action against the head of Meta India, along with several accounts on Facebook and Instagram, following allegations of sharing objectionable content related to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This development comes in the wake of youth protests in Telangana, where complaints were lodged by supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), as reported by The Indian Express.

On Wednesday, the police registered First Information Reports (FIRs) under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act, responding to the grievances of BJP members. T. Saikiran Goud, a prominent member of the Telangana BJP social media core committee, claimed that around twenty accounts on the two platforms had disseminated altered images and videos that he described as derogatory towards the Prime Minister. Goud expressed concerns that such content could undermine the nation’s sovereignty and public order, urging a thorough investigation into the matter.

In his complaint, Goud stated, “On behalf of Telangana BJP workers, we seek an investigation into certain Instagram accounts that have been publishing and circulating content which is derogatory towards the prime minister.” He emphasized the potential harmful narratives that might arise from such publications, which he believes could negatively influence public perception and unrest.

Additionally, another BJP supporter echoed similar sentiments, alleging that various Instagram accounts were sharing “obscene” content that manipulated the Prime Minister’s image. This situation has sparked significant discussions across social media, bringing attention to the responsibilities of major tech companies like Meta in regulating the type of content circulated on their platforms.
