The countdown to the announcement of the 2026 Puducherry Assembly election results is officially underway, with the counting of votes scheduled to kick off at 8 AM on Monday. This election holds significant importance as it involves a 33-seat assembly, of which three members are nominated by the Union government, holding equivalent powers as the 30 directly elected MLAs. To achieve a majority, a party or coalition needs to secure at least 17 seats, given that the majority threshold is 16 within the 30-member assembly.
Puducherry recently witnessed a vibrant election process, with a remarkable voter turnout of 91.2%, setting a new record for the Union Territory. This figure surpassed the previous high of 86% observed during the 2006 elections, indicating heightened public engagement and interest in the electoral process. The elections were held across all 30 constituencies on April 9, drawing participation from approximately 9.5 lakh voters.
In the 2021 assembly elections, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), under the leadership of the All India NR Congress, emerged victorious, claiming 16 seats and paving the way for N Rangasamy to assume the role of chief minister. As the NDA vies for re-election in this cycle, it faces stiff competition from the Opposition Secular Progressive Alliance, which primarily comprises the Congress and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). The results of the exit polls suggest a strong possibility for the NDA to maintain its hold on power.
In a notable development prior to the elections, the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), led by Thol Thirumavalavan, announced its decision to contest the elections independently. They have committed to fielding candidates in three key constituencies: Ossudu, Nettappakkam, and Uzhavarkarai, while also pledging support for Congress and DMK nominees in other areas.
This election is critical as it will not only determine the political landscape of Puducherry for the coming years but also reflect the public’s sentiment towards the current governance. Political analysts and citizens alike are keenly awaiting the results, which will unfold the fate of various parties and alliances in this vibrant Union Territory.
