In a significant move, the Instagram account of renowned political cartoonist Satish Acharya has been restricted in India, following a legal request from the Indian government. The ban was executed after the social media platform, owned by Meta, conducted a thorough review of the content in question against its policies and assessed the legal and human rights implications.

Instagram confirmed the restriction, stating, “After the review, we restricted access to the content in the location where it goes against local law,” highlighting the platform’s adherence to the 2021 Information Technology Rules. These regulations compel social media sites to remove content deemed unlawful within a strict timeframe of three hours upon receiving directives from governmental entities or courts.

The political cartoonist, who is known for his sharp and often critical commentary on current affairs, took to social media to express his bewilderment at the government’s actions. Acharya remarked, “I have never seen a government that is so scared of cartoons!” This statement was accompanied by a light-hearted tone, as he reflected on the irony of the situation. He also referenced a past remark by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who once claimed that cartoons possess a “healing power” and that cartoonists are “closer to god” due to their ability to discern human traits.
