Former Union Minister Accuses Chief Election Commissioner of Legal Violations in Voter Roll Revision

In a recent statement, former Union minister RK Singh has raised serious allegations against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, claiming that both Kumar and his superior officials are breaching electoral laws during the ongoing special intensive revision of electoral rolls (SIR). The ex-minister contends that this nationwide initiative is not only illegal but undermines the democratic process itself.

Singh, who served under the Narendra Modi government from 2019 to 2024 and was previously the Union home secretary during the Manmohan Singh administration, referred to Section 21 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950. According to him, this provision allows for special revisions of electoral rolls only under specific circumstances that must be recorded in writing, applicable to particular constituencies or segments thereof. He underscored that such exceptions should not be misinterpreted as a standard operating procedure.

Furthermore, Singh criticized a recent Supreme Court ruling which upheld the general SIR, describing it as erroneous. He expressed concern that the current approach of the Union government and the Election Commission appears to be aimed at disenfranchising eligible voters, rather than facilitating their inclusion in the electoral process. “This marks an unprecedented move in the history of our democracy,” he stated emphatically on social media.
