The Gujarat High Court has decided to extend the temporary bail granted to Asumal Harpalani, popularly known as Asaram Bapu, until June 15 in connection with a 2013 rape case for which he was convicted. This extension follows a previous suspension of his sentence, which was initially granted on medical grounds back in November 2022.
Asaram, who has been embroiled in legal battles since his conviction, submitted a request for bail extension, emphasizing his ongoing medical needs. His legal team argued that he requires consistent medical supervision, periodic assessments, and ready access to emergency medical care. The division bench, comprising Justices Ilesh J. Vora and R.T. Vachchani, acknowledged the importance of Asaram’s health in their decision, noting that no adverse incidents were reported during his previous temporary release.
On the opposing side, the state government expressed its reservations, urging the court to dismiss the bail application. They pointed out that Asaram is currently facing an appeal in a separate rape case pending in the Rajasthan High Court, which adds further complexity to his legal situation. The Gujarat High Court, however, chose to prioritize the medical arguments presented and scheduled the next hearing for June 12.
This development comes on the heels of another ruling from the Rajasthan High Court, which had recently extended Asaram’s interim bail until May 25, or until the court issues its verdict regarding his appeal, whichever occurs first. These bail extensions reflect the ongoing legal challenges faced by the self-styled spiritual leader, who was sentenced to life imprisonment by a Jodhpur sessions court in April 2018 for the heinous crime of rape.
The case continues to draw significant public attention, not only due to the serious nature of the allegations but also because of Asaram’s prominence as a religious figure in India. His legal battles highlight the intricate dynamics between faith, law, and justice within the Indian context. As the hearings progress, both supporters and critics closely monitor the proceedings, reflecting the broader societal debates surrounding issues of consent, power dynamics, and accountability.
