Tragic Toll in Kerala: 15 Lives Lost Amid Heavy Rains, 7 Still Missing

Kochi, Kerala – The recent relentless downpour in Kerala has resulted in a devastating loss of life, with the official death toll now reported at 15, as indicated by Chief Minister VD Satheesan on Monday. The state has been grappling with heavy rainfall that began on Friday, which has led to dangerous flash floods and landslides across various districts, compounding the already challenging situation.

As the state continues to battle the adverse weather conditions, seven individuals remain unaccounted for, raising concerns among families and rescue teams. The missing persons include two each from the districts of Kollam and Kannur, while one person is reported missing in Malappuram, Idukki, and Muvattupuzha. The situation in Malappuram has been particularly severe, where reports indicate that four individuals lost their lives due to the extreme weather.

In addition to Malappuram, Kottayam district has also witnessed three fatalities, with further deaths recorded in Ernakulam and Kollam, where two people each have been confirmed dead. The toll is rounded out by one casualty each in Idukki, Muvattupuzha, and Kannur. In response to this tragic series of events, Chief Minister Satheesan announced a series of financial aid measures aimed at supporting the affected families.

To assist those grieving the loss of their loved ones, the Kerala government will provide an immediate sum of Rs 10,000 to cover funeral expenses for each deceased individual’s family. Additionally, those returning home from relief camps will also receive Rs 10,000. In a more substantial gesture of support, the state has committed to offering an ex gratia payment of Rs 8 lakh to the families of the deceased. Furthermore, individuals who have lost their homes and land to landslides will be compensated with Rs 12 lakh, while families will be provided Rs 6 lakh to help rebuild their homes.

The Chief Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to standing by its citizens during these monsoon calamities, highlighting the importance of community resilience in the face of such natural disasters. As rescue operations continue and relief efforts ramp up, the focus remains on ensuring the safety of those still in peril and providing necessary support to those who have been affected.
