The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted an unusual rise in heatwave days for certain regions of India this May. According to the agency’s latest monthly outlook, areas including the Himalayan foothills, eastern coastal states, Gujarat, and Maharashtra are likely to experience above-normal temperatures throughout the month.
The IMD’s report highlights that many parts of the country will see minimum temperatures exceeding the seasonal averages. This prediction comes as India grapples with heightened temperatures, which have already strained energy resources and led to a peak in demand. As the world’s third-largest oil importer, India faces supply challenges, particularly in light of disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz due to geopolitical tensions involving Iran.
Moreover, while regions in northwest India, central India, and adjacent areas of peninsular and southern northeastern India are expected to experience normal to below-normal minimum temperatures, the forecast overall indicates an unusually warm month ahead. This is concerning as the nation heads into the peak summer months, where energy consumption typically intensifies.
Interestingly, despite the anticipated heatwave conditions, the IMD also predicts that India will receive above-normal rainfall during May, with an expected total of 110% of the long-period average. This average is calculated based on rainfall data collected over the past 50 years. However, certain areas in the east, northeast, and east-central parts of the country may experience below-average rainfall, which could impact agricultural activities.
The arrival of the southwest monsoon is also on the horizon, with expectations for it to make landfall in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands between May 14 and May 16. As farmers and agricultural stakeholders prepare for the seasonal shifts, the juxtaposition of heatwave conditions and anticipated rainfall presents a complex scenario for crop management and water resources.
