The Election Commission of India has announced an extension of the deadline for the special intensive revision of electoral rolls in Karnataka by an additional nine days, pushing the new deadline to August 17. This decision marks the second extension in the state as authorities aim to ensure a more inclusive electoral process.
Initially set for August 8, this extension comes in response to appeals from citizens’ rights groups who expressed concerns that a significant number of eligible voters could be left out of the draft electoral rolls. Reports indicate that a substantial population remains at risk of exclusion, with groups advocating for enhanced engagement and support in the enumeration process.
As of the latest updates from the Election Commission, approximately 80.1% of the enumeration forms in Karnataka have been digitized. However, this figure reveals disparities across regions, with the lowest digitization rates reported in the northern, central, and southern sectors of the Bengaluru municipal corporation, where completion rates hover between 49% and 53%. Comparatively, the Bengaluru Urban district has seen a slightly better digitization rate of 55.8%. On a brighter note, Udupi district stands out with an impressive digitization rate of nearly 94%, showcasing the effectiveness of local initiatives.
Under the newly revised schedule, the publication of the draft voter list has been postponed to August 24, a week later than previously planned. Citizens whose names have been removed from the draft list will have the opportunity to submit claims and objections between August 24 and September 23. Following this, hearings for these claims will take place until October 22, culminating in the publication of the final electoral roll by October 27.
Karnataka is one of 16 states involved in this electoral roll revision exercise, aimed at enhancing voter participation and ensuring that the electoral process reflects the true demographics of the state. With these extensions, the Election Commission is working diligently to address the concerns raised by the public and to foster a more robust democratic process in the state.
