In a distressing turn of events, local vendors at Puducherry’s Eden beach were recently evicted as part of a push for the prestigious ‘Blue Flag’ certification aimed at enhancing coastal tourism. The initiative, designed to promote clean and safe beaches, has left residents like 58-year-old Anbukarasi grappling with the harsh realities of livelihood loss.
For many years, the sandy shores of Eden beach thrived with the vibrant buzz of local stalls selling fried fish, fresh corn, and an assortment of trinkets to tourists. However, on February 15, the local authority, the Ariyankuppam Commune Panchayat, issued an eviction notice, demanding the removal of approximately 50 temporary stalls by February 16. This abrupt action left vendors in a state of panic as they relied heavily on the income generated from their sales to support their families.
As the police began dismantling the stalls, Anbukarasi, who has been selling cucumbers and boiled corn, found herself alone in the marketplace, surrounded by the remnants of what was once a thriving hub of activity. “They took about a hundred of us to the police station at Ariyankuppam,” she recounted, highlighting the desperation of the situation. “We pleaded with them to let us keep our shops, as this is our only source of income.” Following intervention from local lawmakers, the vendors were granted a temporary reprieve until February 19, but many chose to leave rather than face further confrontation.
Despite the looming threat of eviction, Anbukarasi remained at her stall, determined to maximize her limited time. “I’m making the most of the three days that I am allowed to run my shop,” she expressed, nervously watching as tourists strolled by. With a meager government assistance of ₹2,500 per month, her market sales have become crucial for her financial sustenance.
This ongoing saga raises critical questions about the impact of the ‘Blue Flag’ initiative on local communities. While the certification aims to promote cleaner and safer beaches, it appears to be at odds with the livelihoods of those who have long depended on these coastal areas. As the push for modernization meets the needs of local populations, it remains essential for authorities to strike a balance that honors both sustainable tourism and community welfare.
