Lok Sabha Speaker Sanctions Merger of Six Uddhav Sena MPs with Eknath Shinde’s Faction

In a significant political development, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has officially sanctioned the merger of six MPs from the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) faction into the group led by Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister, Eknath Shinde. This decision, reported by ANI, follows the earlier defection of these MPs on June 22, when they chose to align themselves with Shinde’s faction, which is now bolstered by a total of 13 Lok Sabha members.

The Shinde faction, having gained strength, is an integral part of the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA). This merger marks a pivotal moment for the Uddhav Sena, which has faced a series of challenges since its split, particularly after several of its members chose to break away. The group had been struggling to maintain unity among its ranks following the ongoing political turmoil in Maharashtra.

On the same day, Speaker Birla also addressed a request from a group of 20 rebel MPs from the Trinamool Congress, allowing them to occupy separate seats within the Lok Sabha chamber. However, the merger of this faction with the Nationalist Citizens Party of India remains under consideration, as indicated by Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju. He expressed that the Speaker is currently reviewing the request, which reflects the dynamic and often tumultuous nature of Indian politics.

These developments come just before the Monsoon Session of Parliament, set to commence on Monday. In light of this, Rijiju has invited MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay from the rebel TMC faction to discuss matters at a floor leaders’ meeting scheduled for Sunday, further highlighting the ongoing negotiations and adjustments within various political parties.

The Uddhav Sena’s recent troubles can be traced back to internal disputes and disagreements over leadership and direction, culminating in this merger that signifies a notable shift in the Maharashtra political landscape. The absence of the six MPs from a crucial meeting of the Uddhav Sena’s parliamentary group on June 18 indicated brewing dissent, ultimately leading to their decision to join Shinde’s faction.
