Bombay High Court Reverses Bail for Dombivli Corporator Accused of Assaulting Doctors

The Bombay High Court has intervened in a significant case involving the alleged assault of healthcare professionals in Dombivli, Maharashtra. On Saturday, the court issued a stay on the bail granted to Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre, who was apprehended for reportedly attacking doctors and staff at the Shastri Nagar Hospital.

The incident, which took place on July 6, arose after Mhatre’s family was informed that a pregnant woman would need to be transferred to another medical facility due to a lack of available beds. Frustrated by the situation, Mhatre and several associates allegedly reacted violently, leading to serious allegations against them. In light of the gravity of the assault and the trial court’s earlier decision to grant bail, a bench consisting of Acting Chief Justice Ravindra V. Ghuge and Justice Gautam Ankhad decided to take suo motu cognizance of the matter.

The court has mandated that Mhatre surrender to the authorities by 5 PM on Sunday. Furthermore, the stay on bail extends to four other individuals also implicated in the incident. The judges cautioned that if Mhatre fails to comply or cannot be contacted, the relevant authorities have the right to initiate actions to attach his properties.

In an important appeal, the High Court has encouraged medical professionals across municipal and state hospitals, along with the Indian Medical Association, to reconsider their planned strike action scheduled for Monday. This request underscores the critical role of healthcare providers and the need to prioritize patient care amid ongoing tensions following the assault.
