Article 370 Wins Best Feature at 72nd National Film Awards; Savarkar Biopic Among Major Winners

The 72nd National Film Awards ceremony has concluded, celebrating excellence in Indian cinema. Aditya Jambhale’s Hindi film, Article 370, which depicts the contentious abrogation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status, garnered the prestigious award for Best Feature Film. The film received acclaim not only for its storytelling but also for its lead actress, Yami Gautam Dhar, who won the Best Actress award for her captivating performance.

The awards, presided over by jury chairperson Jayaraj, recognized films released in 2024 and certified by the Central Board of Film Certification. Article 370 had a successful evening, bringing home a total of three awards, including one for Best Music Direction for Songs, credited to composer Shashwat Sachdev.

In a night that celebrated a diverse range of cinematic styles, Nag Ashwin’s Telugu fantasy drama, Kalki 2898 AD, was honored as the Best Popular Film for its wholesome entertainment value. The film also secured accolades for Best Production Design, awarded to Nitin Zihani Choudhary. The creative achievements within the industry were highlighted, showcasing the fusion of storytelling and technical artistry.

Rajkumar Periasamy’s Tamil film Amaran earned the title of Best Director, with R Kalaivannan winning for Best Editing, demonstrating the importance of both direction and editing in crafting compelling narratives. Additionally, Randeep Hooda’s biopic, Swatantrya Veer Savarkar, was recognized for Best Debut Film of a Director, marking a notable entry into the film industry.

The awards also celebrated outstanding performances, with the Best Actor award being shared by Malayalam superstar Mammootty for Bramayugam and Bollywood’s Kartik Aaryan for Chandu Champion. Bramayugam further distinguished itself by clinching the Best Cinematography award, awarded to Shehnad Jalal. Additionally, the screenplay categories were dominated by talented writers; Sukumar’s Pushpa 2: The Rule took home the award for Best Original Screenplay, while Yogesh Deshpande received the Best Adapted Screenplay award for Swargandharva Sudhir Phadke. The Best Costume Designer award was shared between Deepali Noor and Sheetal Sharma for their work on Pushpa 2.
