In a significant escalation of tensions at Jamia Millia Islamia University in Delhi, the police detained several students on Monday during ongoing protests demanding timely elections for the students’ union. This unrest has been brewing since October 12, sparked by the long-standing absence of student union elections, which have not occurred since 2006.
The protests intensified as students expressed their frustrations over the university administration’s slow response to their demands. A group of students initiated a hunger strike to draw attention to their cause, with five participants committing to the protest to advocate for the restoration of their union. However, on October 16, the situation took a drastic turn when the university rusticated one of the hunger strikers and suspended two others, preventing them from entering campus for up to a year.
In a recent development, the university announced that elections for the student union would take place within 15 days of the approval of the union’s constitution. Additionally, it was reported that the administration has retracted the suspensions and show-cause notices previously issued to protesting students. To address concerns regarding the actions of security personnel during the protests, a committee is set to be established for a thorough investigation.
Despite these measures, many students voiced their dissatisfaction, claiming that their broader demands were not fully acknowledged by the administration. Reports suggest that some were pressured into signing an agreement with the university early on Monday, raising concerns about the transparency of the negotiations. This has led to additional frustrations among the student body, particularly among those who are continuing their hunger strike, such as Ebin Basil and Rehan Khan, who have remained steadfast for 15 days in pursuit of their objectives.
The ongoing protests at Jamia Millia Islamia reflect a larger narrative of student activism in India, where calls for democratic processes within academic institutions are becoming increasingly prominent. As students rally for their rights, the administration’s handling of the situation will be closely scrutinized, both by the student body and the wider public.
