Tragedy Strikes Puri Rath Yatra as Two Lives Lost Amid Unprecedented Crowds

In a somber turn of events during the annual Jagannath Rath Yatra in Puri, Odisha, two individuals tragically lost their lives amidst what officials described as an “unprecedented rush” of devotees. Despite the unfortunate fatalities, the Odisha state government has maintained that there was no stampede at the event. According to Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi’s advisor, Prakash Mishra, seven other devotees experienced health issues and required medical attention. Among those affected was a 60-year-old man whose death’s specifics are still under investigation, and a 35-year-old man who suffered a cardiac arrest despite immediate medical assistance.

State Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling reiterated that there was no stampede during the festivities, attempting to alleviate fears surrounding the incident. Inspector General of Police for Fire and Emergency Services, Umashankar Dash, reported that approximately 100 individuals felt suffocated in the dense crowd and required assistance. Videos released by the Odisha Police showcased their efforts to navigate ambulances through the throngs of people, highlighting the challenges faced in managing such vast gatherings.
