Leaders from Prashant Kishor’s Jan Suraaj Switch Allegiance to BJP Ahead of Bihar Bye-Poll

In a significant political development ahead of the upcoming Assembly bye-election in Bihar’s Bankipur constituency, several leaders from Prashant Kishor’s Jan Suraaj party have formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The announcement was made on Wednesday, with notable figures such as KC Sinha, Bittu Singh, and Gopal Singh among those making the switch. These leaders had previously contested the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections as candidates from Jan Suraaj, a party that marked its entry into the electoral arena during that election cycle.

The bye-election in Bankipur is scheduled for July 30, necessitated by the resignation of BJP National President Nitin Nabin, who vacated the seat after being elected to the Rajya Sabha. This has opened up an opportunity for fresh competition in a constituency that has historically leaned towards the BJP. In this bye-poll, Prashant Kishor is making his electoral debut as a candidate, while the BJP has fielded Neeraj Kumar Sinha for the contest. The opposition party, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), has chosen Rekha Kumari Gupta as its candidate, adding more intrigue to the upcoming election.

Bankipur, located in the vicinity of Patna, has been a bastion for the BJP, with Nabin representing the constituency since 2010. His political journey included a prior tenure in the Patna West seat before constituency boundaries were restructured. The BJP’s stronghold in this area makes the bye-poll particularly critical, as it may set the tone for future electoral battles in Bihar.

Despite Jan Suraaj’s vigorous campaign in the 2025 Assembly elections, where it fielded candidates in 238 out of the state’s 243 constituencies, the party failed to secure any seats. The party had faced internal challenges, evidenced by the last-minute switch of Jan Suraaj’s Munger candidate Sanjay Singh to the BJP just a day before the first phase of polling. Additionally, three other candidates from Danapur, Brahmapur, and Gopalganj withdrew their nominations prior to the elections, which Kishor claimed was due to external pressures.

As the political landscape in Bihar continues to evolve, the recent defections from Jan Suraaj to the BJP highlight the ongoing shifts in party alliances and voter sentiments. Kishor’s debut in the electoral fray adds a layer of complexity to the bye-election, as he seeks to establish his party’s presence in the state.
