Karnataka Government Exonerates Three Police Officers in Bengaluru Stampede Incident

The Karnataka government has officially concluded disciplinary actions against three Indian Police Service officers involved in the tragic stampede that occurred in Bengaluru in June 2025, resulting in the loss of 11 lives. According to reports, the state has cleared these officers of all allegations following a thorough review of their written defenses and recommendations from the administrative department.

The incident took place on June 4, 2025, at Gate Number 3 of the Chinnaswamy Stadium during a celebration of the Indian Premier League victory by the Royal Challengers Bengaluru. More than 50 individuals sustained injuries during the chaotic event as fans flocked to the stadium for the post-match festivities.

Initially, in the aftermath of the stampede, the Karnataka government took swift action by suspending five officers, including former Bengaluru Police Commissioner B. Dayananda, former Additional Commissioner of Police Vikash Kumar, and former Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Shekhar H. Tekkannavar. The suspensions were based on claims of negligence and irresponsibility in managing the crowd during the event.

As time progressed, the government reevaluated its decision. On July 28, 2025, the suspensions of all officers except Vikash were revoked, highlighting a shift in the handling of the case. Vikash subsequently challenged his suspension at the Central Administrative Tribunal, which ruled in his favor and mandated that the government extend the same relief to him as granted to his colleagues, leading to the eventual closure of the disciplinary proceedings.

The decision to drop the charges against these officers has sparked discussions regarding accountability and the measures in place for ensuring public safety during large events. While the government has defended its actions based on the reviews conducted, the families of the victims continue to seek justice and accountability in light of the tragic events that unfolded.
