Congress Invites Mamata Banerjee to Martyrs’ Day, Calls Her Departure a ‘Mistake’

Sarkar emphasized the importance of Banerjee’s presence at the event, suggesting that her acknowledgment of the past could serve as a powerful act of political atonement. ‘If Mamata Banerjee truly has the courage, she should not distort history,’ he stated, highlighting that the 1993 protest was organized under the auspices of the Youth Congress, which Banerjee was a part of before her departure from the party in December 1997. This led to the formation of the TMC on January 1, 1998.
