The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has officially communicated to the Election Commission of India (ECI) that Mamata Banerjee continues to serve as the party chief, following a recent upheaval involving a faction of rebel MLAs. This development unfolded after a group led by Ritabrata Banerjee attempted to oust Mamata from her position, declaring a separate entity referred to as the ‘real TMC’, which would be headed by Arup Roy.
On Monday, the rebel MLAs claimed they were acting in the interest of the party and suggested that Mamata Banerjee should transition into a role as the chief adviser. They announced the formation of a new National Working Committee and included 29 members, asserting that this reconstitution was necessary for the party’s governance.
In response to these claims, the TMC leadership, loyal to Mamata Banerjee, swiftly reaffirmed her position. The party issued a formal letter stating that she remains the unequivocal chairperson of the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC). This communication also detailed the party’s restructured leadership, which includes Subrata Bakshi as vice president, Abhishek Banerjee as the national general secretary and Lok Sabha leader, alongside Derek O’Brien among other key members.
The backdrop of this political drama is rooted in the ongoing tensions within the TMC, highlighting divisions that have emerged in recent months. The party, which has been a significant player in West Bengal politics, is grappling with internal dissent as some members express dissatisfaction over leadership decisions and the party’s direction. Ritabrata Banerjee’s assertion that the TMC’s constitution mandates the formation of a National Working Committee every three years suggests a push for increased democratic processes within the party.
As the rift grows, observers are keen to see how Mamata Banerjee navigates this challenge. Her governance of West Bengal has been marked by dynamic policies and a strong focus on welfare programs, which have bolstered her popularity. However, this internal strife could impact her leadership not only within the TMC but also in the larger political landscape of the state as West Bengal prepares for upcoming electoral battles.
