In a significant shift in Maharashtra’s political landscape, six Members of Parliament from the Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray faction of the Shiv Sena have defected to the rival group led by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. This move, which occurred on Monday, has brought the Uddhav faction’s representation in the Lok Sabha down to just three MPs, while bolstering Shinde’s faction to a total of 13 representatives.
The MPs who have made the switch include Nagesh Patil Ashtikar from Hingoli, Omprakash Nimbalkar of Osmanabad, Mumbai North-East’s Sanjay Dina Patil, Sanjay Deshmukh representing Yavatmal-Washim, Sanjay Jadhav from Parbhani, and Bhausaheb Wakchaure from Shirdi. This exodus marks a critical moment for the Uddhav faction, which has faced mounting pressures and challenges since the split in the Shiv Sena.
On Sunday, Devendra Fadnavis, a prominent leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, referred to the shift of the Uddhav Sena MPs as a successful “operation.” He noted that the Shinde faction is committed to completing its objectives, suggesting a tactical approach to consolidating power. This reflects the ongoing power struggle within the Shiv Sena and the political maneuvering that characterizes Maharashtra’s current political climate.
In response to the defections, Uddhav Thackeray convened a meeting in Mumbai to strategize for the future, focusing on upcoming political developments and organizational matters. Reports indicate that he has also summoned an emergency meeting of all party legislators to address the fallout from the defections and to discuss potential strategies to retain their remaining members. There are growing concerns that the Shinde faction may attempt to entice additional MLAs, MLCs, and municipal corporators from the Uddhav faction, further weakening his position.
Thackeray, acknowledging the discontent among voters regarding the actions of the defectors, extended an apology to those who supported the rebel MPs, indicating his willingness to resign if it would restore faith in his leadership. His approach underscores a recognition of the need for unity and a reassessment of party strategies moving forward.
