In a significant development, nine individuals were taken into custody in Bihar’s Lakhisarai district on Sunday for allegedly taking the re-examination of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) in place of registered candidates. This re-test was conducted for the undergraduate medical admission process and has drawn considerable attention due to prior allegations of malpractice.
Superintendent of Police Prerna Kumar confirmed to the Press Trust of India that a First Information Report (FIR) will be filed once formal complaints are received from the respective center superintendents. Kumar also indicated that the police are interrogating 10 to 12 additional individuals, including middlemen and biometric operators, who may have played a role in this alleged fraudulent activity.
The re-examination took place across 5,440 centers in India and 14 international locations, a response to the cancellation of the original NEET exam scheduled on May 3 due to serious allegations of a question paper leak. During the initial examination, over 22 lakh candidates had appeared, highlighting the immense scale of this national entrance test.
The decision to cancel the May exam arose after the Rajasthan Special Operations Group initiated an investigation into claims that a leaked “guess paper” had circulated, containing questions that closely resembled those in the actual exam. Reports indicated that the guess paper included approximately 410 questions, with about 120 of them matching the chemistry section of the test, raising substantial concerns about the integrity of the examination process.
As the NEET exam serves as a crucial gateway for aspiring medical students in India, the authorities are under pressure to ensure a transparent and fair examination environment. The current investigation aims not only to address the recent fraud but also to restore confidence among candidates and their families regarding the examination system.
