The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has intensified its inquiry into the tragic rape and murder of a doctor from Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital by questioning former Trinamool Congress MLA Nirmal Ghosh on Thursday. The questioning took place at the CBI office located in the New Town area of Kolkata, following a summons issued to Ghosh.
This case has gained significant attention, particularly after Ratna Debnath, the victim’s mother and now a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA representing Panihati, sought judicial intervention last month. She filed a petition in a Sealdah court demanding action against Ghosh, alongside Trinamool Congress councillor Sanjib Mukhopadhyay and party worker Somnath Das.
Allegations from the victim’s family suggest that Ghosh and his associates attempted to expedite the cremation process and hinder a second post-mortem examination of the deceased. They assert that the cremation was conducted without the proper documentation being provided to them, raising serious concerns about the handling of the case by local authorities.
In a related development, CBI officials also visited the crematorium in Panihati where the doctor was cremated. This visit aims to gather more evidence and insight into the circumstances surrounding the case. Debnath expressed that the recent actions taken by the CBI have rekindled her family’s hope for justice regarding her daughter’s untimely death. She recounted a harrowing experience at the Tala police station on August 10, 2024, where they awaited the second post-mortem. During this time, they were reportedly informed that Ghosh, Mukhopadhyay, and Das had already retrieved the body from the station and were preparing to conduct the cremation without their consent.
This case highlights the broader issues of accountability and justice in India, particularly in cases involving influential political figures. As investigations continue, the CBI’s findings and actions will be closely monitored, with many hoping for a resolution that provides justice to the victim and her family.
