Mob Lynching in Assam: Two Men Killed Over Suspected Cattle Theft

In a tragic incident that unfolded in Assam’s Sonitpur district, two individuals from a minority community were reportedly killed by a mob on Friday, following allegations of cattle theft. According to Barun Purkayastha, the Senior Superintendent of Police in Sonitpur, a case has been registered regarding the incident; however, there have been no arrests made thus far. The deceased men were identified as residents of Morigaon district who were intercepted by local villagers while allegedly attempting to flee with three cows in a mini-truck. Eyewitness accounts suggest that the mob reacted violently, leading to severe injuries that ultimately resulted in the victims’ deaths before law enforcement could arrive at the scene.

This incident comes on the heels of a stern warning issued by Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, who has emphasized the state’s zero-tolerance stance towards cattle smuggling. In a recent statement, Sarma highlighted that over 850 individuals accused of cattle theft have been apprehended since the start of the year, alongside the seizure of more than 2,980 kilograms of beef. The chief minister’s remarks were particularly pointed as they were made in anticipation of the Bakrid festival, set to be celebrated on May 27, which is significant in the Muslim calendar and traditionally includes the sacrifice of livestock.

The surge in mob violence associated with allegations of cattle theft has prompted discussions about the legal and social frameworks governing such issues in Assam. Critics argue that the intensifying crackdown on cattle smuggling has inadvertently encouraged vigilante justice, where communities take the law into their own hands rather than letting authorities handle suspected crimes.
