Zee News Faces Censure for Content Allegedly Targeting Muslim Community

The News Broadcasting and Digital Standards Authority (NBDSA) has taken a firm stance against Zee News, issuing a censure for airing content deemed misleading and potentially harmful to communal harmony. This decision underscores the regulator’s commitment to uphold principles of accuracy and verification in broadcast journalism.

In a ruling dated May 19, retired Justice AK Sikri, who chairs the NBDSA, identified two specific instances where Zee News allegedly breached fundamental journalistic ethics. The first instance involved a controversial segment concerning the Kanwar Yatra—a significant religious pilgrimage undertaken by devotees, known as Kanwariyas, who travel long distances to fetch water from the Ganga River, primarily from Haridwar, and bring it back to their local temples.

During this pilgrimage, an incident occurred in Delhi where shards of glass were discovered scattered on a roadway. Initially reported as having resulted from an accident involving an e-rickshaw transporting glass panels, the coverage by Zee News on July 13, 2025, suggested an alternative narrative. The program featured a debate that hinted at a possible conspiracy against the pilgrims, despite lacking substantial evidence and relying heavily on unverified claims.

The regulator found that the show’s anchor posed leading questions that skewed the discussion, amplifying unsubstantiated allegations made by some guests. Such reporting not only misrepresents facts but also risks fostering division among communities, particularly in a country as diverse as India where social harmony is paramount.

In response to these findings, the NBDSA mandated Zee News to retract the misleading content in one case and issued a warning concerning the other. This action highlights the increasing scrutiny that news outlets face in an era where media influence can have far-reaching consequences on societal relations.
