In a significant political development in Tamil Nadu, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has crossed the majority threshold in the state assembly with the unconditional support of the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)). This coalition has bolstered TVK’s position, bringing its total count of supporting MLAs to 119, thus facilitating the formation of a new government.
The recent elections saw the TVK emerge as the single largest party, winning 108 seats, although it initially fell short of the 117-seat halfway mark required for a clear majority. In a strategic move, the Congress party, which holds five seats in the assembly, extended its support to the TVK on Wednesday, followed by the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), contributing an additional two MLAs to the coalition.
Following this development, TVK leader Vijay met with Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar to officially stake his claim to form the government. In a statement highlighting their support, CPI(M) State Secretary TT Shanmugam clarified that while their party would back the TVK-led administration, they would not seek positions in the cabinet. He emphasized that their primary objective was to prevent a re-election in the state.
The alliance between the TVK, CPI, and CPI(M) marks a significant shift in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape, especially considering that they were previously allied with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). This emerging coalition reflects a strategic effort to consolidate leftist and regional aspirations within the state’s governance framework.
As the political landscape of Tamil Nadu continues to evolve, outgoing Chief Minister MK Stalin has urged the Governor to act swiftly in recognizing the new government. With the TVK set to take the reins, all eyes will be on how this coalition navigates the challenges ahead and fulfills its promises to the electorate.
