In a significant political development in Tamil Nadu, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader MK Stalin announced that his party will allow the newly formed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor-politician Vijay, to take the lead in forming the state government. This statement was made during an interview with The Times of India, wherein Stalin indicated that the DMK would “observe without intervening for six months” as the political landscape unfolds.
The announcement comes on the heels of the Tamil Nadu elections, where the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, in its inaugural electoral campaign, emerged as the largest party, securing 108 seats out of 234 in the Assembly. Despite this impressive showing, TVK fell short of the crucial majority mark of 118 seats, necessitating alliances with other parties to successfully establish a government.
In a related development, the TVK has garnered the support of the Indian National Congress, which holds five seats. However, even with this backing, the TVK remains five seats shy of a governing majority. On Wednesday, Vijay had an audience with Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Arlekar to lay claim to form the government, following Congress’s support announcement earlier that day. Reports indicate that the Governor has requested additional proof of the TVK’s majority support before officially sanctioning the formation of the government.
The TVK is actively engaged in discussions with the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, as well as the Communist Party of India and CPI (Marxist), both of which won two seats each in the recent elections. There is speculation regarding their willingness to collaborate with TVK, especially considering their previous alignment with the DMK-led coalition during the elections.
The political scenario in Tamil Nadu is evolving, with the DMK’s decision to observe rather than disrupt the process reflecting a strategic approach to the changing dynamics. As alliances shift and new partnerships form, the coming weeks will be crucial for Vijay and the TVK as they navigate the complexities of Tamil Nadu’s political landscape.
