In a significant turn of events during the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, Vijay, the chief of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), is currently ahead in both the constituencies of Perambur and Tiruchirapalli (East). As of the latest counting updates, Vijay has established a strong lead against candidates from the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), showcasing the potential impact of his new political venture.
After the completion of four rounds of counting, Vijay is leading by a margin of 9,038 votes against DMK’s RD Shekar in Perambur, situated in northern Chennai. The counting process is set to continue for a total of 22 rounds in this constituency. Shekar, who previously won the Perambur seat in the 2019 bye-elections and again in the 2021 Assembly elections, is facing a tough challenge from the TVK leader.
Similarly, in Tiruchirapalli (East), Vijay is ahead of DMK’s S Inigo Irudayaraj by 6,499 votes after the same number of counting rounds. This constituency will also undergo 22 rounds of counting. Irudayaraj is a notable opponent, having won this seat in the previous Assembly elections held in 2021, yet he now finds himself trailing against the rising star of the TVK.
At the broader state level, the TVK has made a remarkable entrance into Tamil Nadu politics. As per the latest figures at 11:50 AM, the party is leading in 109 seats, while the AIADMK is ahead in 62 seats and the DMK in 41 constituencies. This emergence of the TVK marks a notable shift in the political landscape, as Vijay established the party only recently, on February 2, 2024. The impressive performance of TVK indicates a growing discontent with the traditional Dravidian parties, which have dominated Tamil Nadu politics for decades.
The 2021 elections saw the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance, which included Congress and Left parties, securing a staggering 159 seats out of the 234-member Assembly, thus ending a decade-long rule by the AIADMK. This year, the evolving dynamics, with TVK’s debut, could signify a transformative phase in Tamil Nadu’s political arena, as voters seem to be gravitating towards new alternatives. With the counting process ongoing, the final results could reshape the state’s future governance.
