In a heartbreaking development, Gujarat is grappling with a surge in Chandipura virus infections, which has claimed the lives of 22 children since early July. Health Minister Praful Pansheriya confirmed the alarming statistics, shedding light on the state’s ongoing battle with this viral outbreak.
As of now, there are seven confirmed cases of children currently receiving treatment at various civil hospitals across the state. On a more positive note, six young patients have successfully recovered and been discharged. According to the latest reports, a total of 184 suspected cases of the Chandipura virus have been documented, with 35 confirmed positive and test results for 11 cases still pending.
The Chandipura Vesiculovirus, also referred to as Chandipura Viral Encephalitis, is primarily transmitted through bites from infected sandflies and mosquitoes, including the Aedes aegypti species, which is also responsible for spreading dengue fever. Children under the age of 15 are particularly vulnerable to this infection, which can lead to severe health complications such as encephalitis, a potentially fatal inflammation of the brain’s active tissues.
Symptoms of the Chandipura virus include high fever, vomiting, altered mental states, convulsions, diarrhoea, and neurological impairments. The Health Minister emphasized that children admitted for treatment in hospitals located in Gandhinagar, Himmatnagar, Patan, Rajkot, and Bhavnagar are receiving specialized care tailored to their needs. Importantly, the spread of this virus does not appear to be limited to any specific locality within the state, indicating a broader public health concern.
As the state health authorities mobilize resources to combat this outbreak, there is an urgent need for heightened awareness and preventive measures among communities. The situation underscores the critical importance of public health initiatives aimed at reducing the risk of mosquito-borne diseases, especially in vulnerable populations like children. Parents and guardians are advised to remain vigilant and seek immediate medical attention if any symptoms arise in their children.
