The much-anticipated counting of votes for the Assam Assembly elections will kick off at 8 AM on Monday, following a polling day that took place on April 9. This election is crucial as it will determine the political landscape of a state that has been a focal point for various parties. To secure a majority in the 126-seat Assembly, a party or coalition will require at least 64 seats.
Several exit polls suggest a favorable outcome for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which previously secured a stronghold in the state. In 2021, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) maintained its dominance, winning 75 seats. Sarbananda Sonowal served as the Chief Minister during the NDA’s initial term from 2016 to 2021, after which Himanta Biswa Sarma assumed the role following the last elections.
This election cycle has seen a remarkable voter turnout of 85.9%, marking the highest participation rate in Assam’s history. For comparison, the voter turnout in the 2021 elections stood at 82%. Such high engagement reflects the electorate’s commitment to shaping their governance and highlights the importance of electoral participation in a democratic setup.
In terms of electoral processes, the Election Commission opted not to carry out a special intensive revision of the electoral rolls in Assam, unlike in 12 other states and Union Territories. Instead, it instructed the state’s Chief Electoral Officer to undertake a special revision that aligns more closely with regular updates. This involved a door-to-door verification initiative conducted between November 22 and December 20, which did not include any document checks, a departure from the special intensive revision protocol.
The draft voter list released on December 27 indicated that over 10 lakh voters had been registered, although the absence of a rigorous verification process has raised questions about the integrity of the electoral rolls. As the counting progresses, all eyes will be on Assam to see how the political dynamics shift and whether the BJP can once more claim victory, or if another party will emerge to challenge their dominance.
