The World Health Organization (WHO) has laid down guidelines suggesting that adults should engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity, such as brisk walking or cycling, or 75 minutes of vigorous activities like running, accompanied by two sessions of strength training every week. However, alarmingly, only 73% of adults globally adhere to these recommendations, with a significant portion, particularly in Canada, classified as physically inactive.
Physical inactivity signifies a failure to meet these activity guidelines but does not imply complete immobility. Individuals may still partake in light activities like household chores or casual walking; however, they often fall short of engaging in moderate or vigorous exercises. The reality is that people who lead inactive lifestyles often find themselves spending excessive hours in sedentary positions, primarily sitting.
Research indicates that adults typically sit for around six hours a day, although these figures are based on self-reported data, which can sometimes be inaccurate. A few studies utilizing direct observation reveal a more concerning picture of our sedentary habits. With the increasing demands of office work, especially in urban India, it has become paramount to address the health risks associated with prolonged sitting.
Prolonged periods of sitting have been linked to numerous adverse effects on health, including obesity, cardiovascular diseases, and even anxiety and depression. To combat the negative impact of a sedentary lifestyle, experts recommend incorporating regular movement throughout the day. Simple strategies such as taking short breaks every hour to stretch, using standing desks, or even walking during meetings can significantly enhance one’s physical health.
Moreover, urban workplaces in India can foster a more active culture by encouraging employees to participate in group activities, wellness programs, or fitness challenges.
