FIR Filed Against 13, Including Suspended Hansraj College Students, Over Festival Misconduct

In a significant development, a first information report (FIR) has been lodged against 13 individuals, including several students from Delhi University’s Hansraj College, due to allegations of violence and misconduct during the college’s annual festival earlier this month. This incident has raised concerns regarding student discipline and the overall safety at educational institutions.

The FIR was filed at the Maurice Nagar police station on April 24, as reported by The Indian Express on Tuesday. The allegations stem from an event hosted by the student union, which reportedly saw clashes between students and outsiders who had unlawfully entered the college premises. Videos circulated on social media during the festive period, specifically between April 8 and 9, appear to depict altercations among participants, further complicating the situation.

Principal Rama Sharma of Hansraj College acknowledged the gravity of the situation, stating that the college administration felt compelled to involve law enforcement as the circumstances were spiraling out of control. During a conversation with The Indian Express, she confirmed that the college had decided to name four office-bearers of the student union in their complaint, as they were responsible for organizing the festival.

In the wake of these events, the college has taken strict disciplinary measures, suspending 30 students between April 20 and April 25 for various breaches of conduct, which allegedly included defaming the institution on social media platforms. The collective response from the college administration underscores a broader concern regarding student behavior and the integrity of educational environments.

The annual festival, which is intended to celebrate student creativity and camaraderie, has now become a focal point for discussions about maintaining decorum and safety within university settings.
