The Mumbai Police on Sunday filed a first information report (FIR) against several leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) following their protest against Raghav Chadha and six other party members who recently merged with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Rajya Sabha. The FIR targets seven AAP leaders, including Ruben Mascarenhas, who serves as the working president of AAP in Mumbai.
The protest, which was aimed at expressing dissent over the merger, saw preemptive action from the police, resulting in the detention of multiple party members before the demonstration could take place. Mascarenhas accused the authorities of attempting to thwart the planned protest, stating that he had previously informed the police about the event and even received acknowledgment on the morning of the planned demonstration.
According to Mascarenhas, police arrived at his residence at around 1:45 PM, well ahead of the scheduled protest at 3:30 PM, effectively restricting him from leaving his home. Taking to social media, he expressed his frustration, calling the police’s actions “illegal and unacceptable.” Following his detention, he was taken to Khar police station along with other party members but was later released.
Despite the police restrictions, about 50 volunteers from AAP managed to gather and stage a protest near Chadha’s residence in Khar. The police had blocked access to roads leading to the area, thereby limiting vehicular movement and controlling the crowd. This incident has drawn attention to growing tensions within the AAP, particularly in light of recent defections to the BJP, which has raised questions about party unity and governance.
The AAP’s protest reflects a larger narrative in Indian politics, where shifting alliances and party mergers often stir public sentiments and political debates. As the political landscape continues to evolve, the response of party leaders and their supporters will be crucial in shaping the future dynamics of state and national politics.
