BJP Shifts Focus from Anti-Bangladesh Rhetoric Ahead of West Bengal Elections

In December last year, the BJP’s West Bengal opposition leader, Suvendu Adhikari, spearheaded passionate protests in Kolkata over the lynching of Dipu Chandra Das, a Bangladeshi Hindu. Adhikari’s emotional appeals, including a dramatic act of prostration before Hindu ascetics outside the Bangladeshi deputy high commission, were part of the BJP’s strategy to capitalize on communal sensitivities. These demonstrations were framed as a call for justice and aimed at highlighting the alleged persecution faced by Hindus in Bangladesh. For a time, this narrative seemed poised to become a central theme in the BJP’s campaign for the upcoming elections.

Instead of drawing attention to the situation in Bangladesh, the BJP has redirected its focus towards local issues, particularly criticizing the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) government over crime and corruption. Additionally, the BJP has begun to emphasize various welfare schemes aimed at cash transfers, potentially appealing to the economic concerns of voters.

This change in strategy raises questions about the BJP’s long-term approach to communal issues, especially in a state like West Bengal, where demographic and religious dynamics play a critical role in electoral politics.
