NEW DELHI — In a major strategic shift to modernize national air power, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has officially informed Parliament that India has initiated “concerted efforts” to join the French-led 6th-Generation fighter development initiative, known as the Future Combat Air System (FCAS).
The revelation was outlined in the Twenty-Fifth Report of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence (2025–26) presented in the Lok Sabha.
Key Highlights of the Report
* Leapfrogging Technologies: The Ministry of Defence detailed its strategy to bridge air-capability gaps by transitioning from 4.5-generation and 5th-generation platforms directly toward 6th-generation aerial combat technologies.
* The French Connection: Spearheaded by the French government, the FCAS program is aimed at developing next-generation stealth fighters, artificial intelligence integration, human-unmanned teaming (drone swarms), and advanced networked avionics.
* Parallel to AMCA: India’s push to co-develop the 6th-generation FCAS will complement—rather than replace—its domestic 5th-generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) program, which remains under development by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA).
Strategic Context: Rafale Proposal & Domestic Manufacturing
This decision coincides with major progress on India’s 114 Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft (MRFA) requirement:
* French Commercial Bid Submitted: French officials have officially submitted their detailed technical and commercial proposal to the Indian Defence Ministry in response to India’s Letter of Request (LoR) for 114 Rafale jets.
* Local Production Mandate: Under the proposed framework, 94 out of the 114 jets will be manufactured inside India in partnership with domestic industrial firms (such as Tata, Larsen & Toubro, and others).
* Indigenous Integration: Indian defense officials and the IAF are evaluating the French proposal to ensure seamless integration of indigenous weaponry, including variants of the home-grown Astra air-to-air missile.
