Instagram Blocks Posts on Kashmir Pellet Victims, Citing Legal Compliance

In a recent development, Instagram has restricted access to four posts by the digital platform Scroll, marking the fourth instance of such action since June. The social media giant attributed the blocks to “legal requirements” specified under the Information Technology Rules set forth by the Union government. These measures have raised questions about content freedom and censorship in India.

The restrictions began on August 6, when Instagram blocked a post discussing a Scroll report highlighting the plight of pellet gun victims in Kashmir, many of whom have been waiting for compensation for nearly a decade after sustaining their injuries. Additionally, a second post featuring an image devoid of visible pellet injuries was also censored later that day, although Instagram did not clarify the rationale behind this decision.

Earlier, on July 5, another post related to a Scroll article that explored Kashmir’s tumultuous history and its portrayal in Bollywood faced similar scrutiny. Initially, it was restricted due to a screenshot from a film teaser that depicted pellet injuries. Interestingly, a separate post showcasing an image of Srinagar’s iconic Lal Chowk remains accessible, highlighting inconsistencies in the enforcement of these restrictions.

Prior to these instances, on June 22, Instagram also blocked a post concerning a legal challenge stemming from the ban on meat sales in Amritsar. This latest wave of restrictions reflects a growing trend in social media governance in India, where platforms have increasingly cited legal obligations to justify the limiting of content related to sensitive topics.

The implications of these actions extend beyond individual posts. They raise significant concerns regarding free speech and the ability of digital platforms to disseminate information, particularly on contentious issues like Kashmir, which has been the focus of intense political and social debate.
