Three Publishers Arrested in Jammu and Kashmir for Distributing Controversial Books

The Jammu and Kashmir Police’s counter-intelligence unit made headlines on Sunday by arresting three publishers linked to the distribution of two controversial books alleged to contain “pro-separatist content.” This move follows a wave of protests initiated by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) against the books, which led the local administration to take decisive action against several officials.

The books in question are titled Personalities and Legends of J&K by Hilal Ahmed and Santosh Meena, and Great Personalities of Jammu and Kashmir by Dr. Sushant Giri. As a response to the uproar, these publications have been withdrawn from school libraries across the Union Territory.

On Sunday, the police detained Inderpaul Singh from Oberoi Book Service, along with Amardeep Singh and Girish Arora from the Noida-based Dominant Publishers. Authorities are currently investigating their roles in the distribution of these books, which have been described as containing “highly inappropriate content” by officials, as reported by The Indian Express.

According to reports, a total of 123 copies of one book were distributed across the districts of Jammu, Ramban, and Udhampur, while 128 copies of the other were sent to Jammu and Baramulla. The police had previously registered a case on July 4 under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which address issues such as abetment of an offence, criminal conspiracy, and actions that threaten the sovereignty and integrity of India.

This incident sheds light on the ongoing tensions around the dissemination of literature in Jammu and Kashmir, a region that has faced its share of political strife and separatist movements. The crackdown on these publishers reflects the sensitive nature of the content being circulated and the strict stance taken by the authorities to maintain public order.
