In a dramatic turn of events within the Trinamool Congress (TMC), a faction of rebel MLAs have taken a bold step by declaring Mamata Banerjee’s removal as the party’s chairperson. Led by Ritabrata Banerjee, the group asserts that they represent the ‘real TMC’ and have appointed Arup Roy to lead the party moving forward.
During a special session convened on Monday, the rebel legislators announced the formation of a new national working committee, which they claim has been constituted in accordance with the party’s constitution that mandates the establishment of such a body every three years. Ritabrata Banerjee, an MLA from Uluberia Purba, emphasized that Roy has been associated with the party since its inception, indicating a desire for continuity amidst the upheaval. Alongside Roy, 29 other members were elected to the committee, marking a significant shift in the party’s leadership dynamics.
Banerjee, speaking to the media, expressed a desire for Mamata Banerjee to continue serving as a chief adviser to the party, highlighting a complex relationship amidst the tensions. Although Abhishek Banerjee, the national general secretary and a prominent figure in the party, was not mentioned during the meeting, the rebel faction seems keen on restructuring the party to better align with their vision. They have planned to establish state and district committees, along with spokesperson roles and other organizational structures, to reinforce their authority.
However, the legitimacy of this coup has been questioned by loyalists of Mamata Banerjee, including former West Bengal minister Madan Mitra, who argued that the rebel MLAs lack the authority to alter the party’s established framework. Mitra emphasized that the TMC operates under a constitution that governs its structure and decision-making processes, suggesting that the rebels may face significant challenges ahead.
This internal rift comes at a crucial time for the TMC, as the party continues to navigate the complexities of West Bengal’s political landscape. With upcoming elections on the horizon, the implications of this leadership dispute could resonate across the state’s political arena, influencing voter sentiment and party allegiance.
