A recent incident involving a humanoid robot in Beijing highlights this innovative approach. Daniel Wang, a Beijing resident, found himself greeted by a robot developed by X Square Robot, a company based in Shenzhen, upon his return home. While the robot was tasked with simple chores like folding clothes and organizing shoes, it primarily served a more critical function: collecting data to enhance its training.
Wang’s experience illustrates a growing trend in robotics, where companies are seeking to gather training data in real-world scenarios. He noted that he was comfortable with the robot’s presence in his home, stating, “In terms of privacy, I’m okay with showing these [home] scenes.” For a modest fee of 149 yuan (approximately $22), Wang contributed to the development of physical AI during the robot’s three-hour service.
The robotics industry has been facing challenges due to a lack of comprehensive training data that merges complex visual input with movement patterns. Historically, robots were trained using teleoperation, where human operators would perform repetitive tasks to teach robots basic functions. However, this method is labor-intensive and does not adequately prepare robots for the diverse and dynamic environments they will encounter in everyday life.
