In a surprising turn of events, independent candidate Parimal Nathwani, backed by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), has emerged victorious in the Rajya Sabha elections held in Jharkhand. His success came after a controversial cross-voting incident, which has raised eyebrows within the state’s political circles. Nathwani defeated the Congress nominee Pranav Jha, who was part of the ruling coalition.
The outcome of this election was particularly noteworthy as it featured two candidates vying for the Upper House seat from Jharkhand. While Nathwani managed to secure 30 votes, two of these were ultimately declared invalid. In contrast, the Congress candidate received 20 votes, with one also deemed invalid. The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) candidate Baidyanath Ram secured 30 votes and won the second seat, showcasing the complex dynamics of the ruling alliance, which includes the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist) Liberation.
The coalition, which boasts a total of 56 MLAs in the 81-member assembly, required a candidate to achieve at least 28 first-preference votes to clinch victory. The results of the election have sparked speculation regarding the identity of those who may have cross-voted, adding a layer of intrigue to the already contentious political landscape in Jharkhand.
This victory marks Nathwani’s fourth term in the Rajya Sabha, highlighting his political resilience. He previously represented Jharkhand from 2008 until 2020 and was then re-elected from Andhra Pradesh under the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party. As a prominent figure in corporate affairs at Reliance Industries, chaired by Mukesh Ambani, Nathwani’s background merges business acumen with political strategy, making him a significant player in both arenas.
Following the announcement of the election results, Nathwani took to social media to express gratitude towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the NDA leadership for their support. His victory is seen as a testament to the shifting political alliances and the potential repercussions for the Congress party in Jharkhand, which is grappling with internal challenges and the implications of cross-voting within its ranks.
