Imphal, Manipur – Tensions flared outside a hospital in Imphal on Monday, following the arrival of three Kuki men who were injured in a recent shooting in Kangpokpi district. The men were transported to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences for treatment, igniting protests by a large crowd that accused them of being extremists. In response to the escalating situation, security forces resorted to using tear gas and lathi charges to disperse the protesters.
The three injured individuals, who belong to the Kuki community, were initially admitted to the 183 Military Hospital in Leimakhong before being transferred to the more specialized facility in Imphal. This transfer, however, sparked outrage among the gathered protesters, who questioned the motives behind the treatment and expressed their disdain towards the security forces for facilitating their transfer.
In light of the disturbance, the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences issued a statement underscoring its commitment to providing medical care to all patients, irrespective of their background or the circumstances surrounding their injuries. The hospital emphasized that it is the ethical duty of healthcare professionals to treat anyone in need of medical assistance, calling for understanding from the public to avoid obstructing hospital operations, which could jeopardize the care for critically ill patients.
The institute further condemned the use of mock bombs and smoke bombs that were deployed within the hospital premises during the protests, highlighting the serious implications such actions could have on patient safety and hospital functionality. As tensions continue to simmer in the region, hospital authorities reiterated the importance of maintaining a peaceful environment conducive to healing and medical care.
This incident is reflective of the broader unrest in Manipur, where communal tensions have been on the rise. The ongoing strife between various communities in the state often leads to confrontations and escalated violence, raising concerns about the safety and well-being of residents. As the authorities navigate these complex dynamics, the need for dialogue and understanding remains crucial for restoring peace in the region.
