The Election Commission (EC) has announced that repolling will occur in specific booths across West Bengal where tampering of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) has been confirmed. This decision comes in response to serious allegations made by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) regarding the integrity of the electoral process in the Falta Assembly constituency. The state’s Chief Electoral Officer confirmed that investigation into the reported incidents is ongoing, ensuring transparency in the electoral process.
On Wednesday, BJP’s publicity chief Amit Malviya publicly accused certain polling booths in Falta of being compromised, claiming that tape was used to obstruct the voting button for the BJP candidate. Malviya called for immediate repolling in all affected booths, stressing that the integrity of the elections is paramount. He shared videos via social media that allegedly show instances of such tampering, particularly highlighting booth number 170 where the voting options for the BJP candidate were reportedly covered.
The allegations of EVM tampering have raised significant concerns among voters and political analysts alike, as they challenge the credibility of the election process. Malviya further pointed out that booth number 189 and several others had similar issues, alleging a systematic attempt to manipulate the elections in favor of other candidates. This situation has sparked a heated debate regarding the reliability of EVMs in India, and the EC’s response will be critical in restoring public confidence.
The controversy is intensified by the ongoing political dynamics in West Bengal, where the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has been under scrutiny. Banerjee has been vocal in her support for Jehangir Khan, a candidate from the TMC in Falta who has faced legal issues. Critics suggest that the allegations against the BJP reflect a broader strategy to undermine electoral opposition, linking it to what they term the ‘Diamond Harbour Model’—a phrase that has become synonymous with claims of electoral malpractice in the region.
As the situation unfolds, the Election Commission’s forthcoming actions will be closely monitored. The repolling decision aims to address the grievances of voters while ensuring that the democratic process remains untainted. With elections being a cornerstone of democracy, the efficiency and fairness of the electoral system in West Bengal remain at the forefront of political discourse.
