Ten Indians Charged in Visa Fraud Scheme Linked to Fake Armed Robberies in the US

In a startling development, a jury in Boston, Massachusetts, has indicted ten Indian nationals for their alleged involvement in a conspiracy to commit armed robberies at local convenience stores. The aim was to enable store clerks to falsely register as victims of crime, thereby allowing them to apply for U non-immigration visas intended for those who have endured mental or physical abuse and assisted law enforcement.

The allegations surfaced earlier this year in March when US prosecutors filed a criminal complaint against the accused. According to court documents, the mastermind behind the scheme, an Indian citizen named Rambhai Patel, orchestrated these staged robberies across at least six convenience stores and fast-food establishments in Massachusetts. The robberies were intended to create a façade of violent crime, thus facilitating fraudulent visa applications.

Patel’s legal troubles escalated when he was convicted in August, leading to a sentence of 20 months and eight days in prison. Alongside Patel, eleven others face charges ranging from aiding in the staged robberies to financing the participation of themselves or family members as fabricated victims.
