Tragic Toll Rises to 1,311 from Nepal-China Flash Floods, Rescues Ongoing

A devastating flash flood and mudslide that struck regions of Nepal and China on August 26 has led to a heartbreaking death toll, which has now reached 1,311, according to recent reports. The majority of victims, totaling 1,290, were from Nepal, while 21 fatalities were confirmed on the Chinese side of the border, as per information released by the Xinhua news agency.

The floods have left nearly 5,000 individuals unaccounted for in Nepal and over 500 in China, with a significant number of those missing being foreign nationals. Specifically, reports indicate that over 600 foreigners are among those still untraceable in Nepal.

Amidst the chaos, a glimmer of hope emerged on Friday when rescue teams managed to save two men from a tunnel at the Trishuli 3A Hydropower Project. The survivors, identified as Sanjay Sah and Kabir Maharjan, were located nine days post-disaster after rescuers heard their calls for help emanating from within the tunnel. This incident highlights the ongoing dangers and challenges faced by rescue teams, who are still searching for additional individuals who may be trapped in the flooded area.

According to reports from the Indian Ambassador to Nepal, Naveen Srivastava, 166 Indian nationals have been successfully rescued from various parts of Nepal following the disaster. The floods primarily affected the Rasuwa district, which lies approximately 120 kilometers north of Kathmandu and borders China. Alarmingly, the sudden nature of the floods caught many residents off guard, as there had been no prior rainfall in the region to serve as a warning.

Geologists from the United States Geological Survey have indicated that the floodwaters were a result of geological instabilities, underscoring the potential for natural disasters in this mountainous terrain. As the search and rescue operations continue, authorities remain focused on addressing the immediate needs of the affected populations and coordinating aid efforts to assist those who have lost their homes and livelihoods in this tragic event.
