Facial Recognition Software Identifies 25 Jail-Incarcerated Individuals at Jantar Mantar Protest

In a startling revelation, a recent report has indicated that 25 individuals, who were incarcerated at the time, were identified by facial recognition software during a protest at Jantar Mantar. The protest, which was held by youth groups, drew attention not only for its cause but now also for the implications surrounding the use of technology in law enforcement.

The report, published by The Indian Express, detailed that from a total of 2,873 individuals flagged by the technology as having criminal records, the police indicated that 25 were in prison according to their records. This data was submitted to the Supreme Court on August 17, as part of a hearing regarding allegations of excessive police actions against the protesters during their march to Parliament on July 20.

According to the police, the facial recognition system matched individuals present at the protest with existing criminal records in their databases. However, the authorities did not clarify whether these individuals were merely named in criminal cases, accused, or already convicted. A closer examination of these 25 individuals revealed that 17 of them faced serious charges, including murder, while four were accused of rape and another four were charged with attempted murder.

In its affidavit presented before the court, the police stated that no actions would be taken solely based on the results of the facial recognition software. They emphasized that further field verification would be conducted to confirm the identities of individuals flagged by the system, given that their details were already documented in police records.

This incident raises significant questions about the intersection of technology, privacy, and civil liberties, particularly in contexts involving protests and public demonstrations. The scrutiny surrounding police practices during protests has intensified, especially in light of previous allegations regarding the use of force against demonstrators.
