Lovely Professional University Halts Classes Amid Protests Over Alleged Rape Incident

Lovely Professional University (LPU), located in Phagwara, Punjab, has decided to suspend all classes for a period of ten days starting from Monday. This decision comes in the wake of significant student protests following allegations of a rape incident on campus. The university has also postponed mid-term examinations indefinitely, causing concern among students and their families.

The protests erupted on Saturday when students accused an outsider, who was reportedly working as a plumber, of entering a female student’s hostel room and allegedly raping her three days prior. The situation escalated over the weekend, leading to clashes that resulted in students damaging university property and blocking the Jalandhar-Phagwara highway. Videos circulating on social media captured students chanting demands for justice, illustrating the heightened emotions surrounding the incident.

As the situation intensified, the university’s administration faced criticism for their perceived inaction regarding the allegations. In a statement, Monica Gulati, the Registrar of LPU, responded to the protests by suggesting that the claims of rape were part of a broader attempt to damage the institution’s reputation.
