At 62, Sunanda Nair stands as a testament to the transformative power of dance. Her journey from the bustling locality of Goregaon in Mumbai to the international stage is a narrative not just of career but of passion, persistence, and self-discovery. Nair, who started her artistic journey at the tender age of six with Bharatanatyam, later embraced Kathakali before ultimately finding her true artistic voice in Mohiniattam, a classical dance form deeply rooted in Kerala’s culture.
Sunanda Nair’s academic contributions to Mohiniattam are significant. In 1989, she became the first student in India to attain both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in this intricate dance form, culminating in a doctorate in 2016. Her doctoral thesis, titled “The Intrinsic Lyrical Feminism in Mohini Attam,” was completed at Mumbai’s Nalanda Nritya Kala Mahavidyalaya, where she not only learned the art but also shaped her identity as a dancer and educator.
In 2000, Nair’s life took a new turn when she relocated to the United States due to her husband’s job. Surprisingly, she did not envision herself continuing her dance career and initially thought she might step away from the stage altogether. However, the calling of her art proved irresistible, as students began to seek her out, leading to a series of performances that transcended her expectations. What began as an unplanned venture transformed into a committed mission to teach and perform Mohiniattam, ensuring its authentic form was presented to American audiences.
Recently, Nair’s dedication and contributions were celebrated when she was awarded the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in the Overseas category for 2024. This accolade not only recognizes her excellence in the art form but also underscores her role in introducing and nurturing Indian classical dance in a foreign land. Through her efforts, she has opened up avenues for cultural exchange and appreciation, bridging the gap between diverse audiences and the rich heritage of Indian classical dance.
For Nair, dance is not merely a profession; it is the essence of her existence. She eloquently states, ‘Dance is my breathing, my survival, my everything.’ Her journey continues to inspire many, reminding us all of the power of passion in shaping our destinies.
