Gujarat Police Launch Probes Against Three Political Parties for Alleged Rs 560 Crore Fraud

The Gujarat Police have initiated investigations against three registered unrecognised political parties and their associated individuals, following significant allegations of financial misconduct. The first information reports (FIRs) were filed by the crime branch on Friday, based on complaints from the Income Tax Department. These complaints claimed that the state had incurred losses amounting to Rs 560 crore due to fraudulent donations totaling approximately Rs 1,870 crore received by the implicated parties.

Registered unrecognised political parties are those that have been registered with the Election Commission but have failed to meet the necessary criteria, such as vote-share or election seats, to be designated as state or national parties. Recent reports from BBC News Hindi highlighted a concerning trend where donations to six unrecognised parties outstripped those of national entities, except for the Bharatiya Janata Party, during the financial year 2023-’24.

The parties specifically named in the FIRs are the Bharatiya National Janata Dal, the Swatantrata Abhivyakti Party, and the Garib Kalyan Party. Alongside these parties, law enforcement has registered cases against individuals linked to them, with four individuals from the Bharatiya National Janata Dal, three from the Swatantrata Abhivyakti Party, and eight associated with the Garib Kalyan Party facing legal scrutiny.

The police allege that these three parties have received substantial donations under dubious circumstances, raising serious questions about the integrity of political financing in the state. The unfolding situation has sparked discussions about the lax regulations surrounding funding for political entities, especially those that do not meet the typical benchmarks for recognition.
