Supreme Court Orders Election Commission to Resolve Trinamool Congress Name and Symbol Conflict Within Four Months

The Supreme Court of India has set a four-month timeline for the Election Commission to determine which faction of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) is entitled to use the party’s original name and its iconic ‘flowers and grass’ symbol. This directive was issued during a hearing on Monday, where the court emphasized the need for prompt resolution in this ongoing dispute between rival factions of the party.

At the heart of the matter is a writ petition filed by Mamata Banerjee, the former Chief Minister of West Bengal, challenging the Election Commission’s recent decision to freeze the original party name and symbol amid an internal conflict. Conversely, the rebel faction, headed by Arup Roy, was designated as ‘Democratic Trinamool Congress’ with the symbol of an ‘envelope’. It is crucial to note that the Election Commission has clarified that these changes are only temporary measures and do not reflect a definitive ruling on the competing claims over the party’s identity.

During the proceedings, the advocate representing the Election Commission informed the Supreme Court that the commission would require one month to allow both factions to finalize their pleadings. Following this period, the commission will have three months to reach a decision regarding the rightful use of the party’s name and symbol.
